LOG CABIN

When a settler came, one of his first concerns was to build a shelter for his family. They would create a sort of hut with the sides built of logs, a wall of stones for a fireplace, and a roof made of bark, with a hole cut through that roof to let out the smoke.

Floors were dirt, and the walls would be chinked with clay, mud, and moss, to help keep out the cold. The entire family would live, eat, and sleep in this one room, usually only about 16 X 20 feet, in all. The Leonard's Mills log cabin is just a bit smaller in size, and was reconstructed on site, log by log and shake by shake.
